Amazon game studios have found themselves in a position where due to a recent acquisition of Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd by Tencent. They were unable to continue with the project as reported by Bloomberg late last night.
Originally announced in 2019, The Lord of The Rings MMORPG sent fans of the franchise wild with the expectation of being able to dip back into the much-loved world. A world that’s enthralled and enchanted us for decades.
Here is what an amazon spokesperson has to say on the matter…
“ We have been unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time.”
The Amazon team working on the game will be moved to other projects. “We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers,” the spokesperson for the Seattle-based company said in a statement.
This is definitely another set back for Amazon Game Studios having now had two projects cancelled in Crucible and Breakaway. The different and complex dimension to this one of course is them having to try negotiating with the giant that is Tencent.
Tencent are a force to be reckoned with. A force signalling real intent in the gaming space.
By no means should the negotiations with Tencent diminish the saddening picture it paints for Amazon Game Studios, however as we’ve said on multiple occasions, making games is hard.
From this point on, for now at least it’s all eyes on that August launch date for New World to see if the title can meet it’s new release date but also the level of success it enjoys.
